ATV 4K/Poor Quality Streams ESPN/TNT NBA Playoffs

Wanted to see if anyone else was having issues or if there were any fixes that anyone knew of. The streams though the ESPN or TNT apps for any of the NBA playoff games for me have very low quality, bad with motion, very choppy all around. Haven't really had any quality issues with any other live sports previously. My internet shouldn't be any issue, I am set up through Ethernet and getting 200+ mbps.

level 1

Could be your connection between the CDN those apps use and you. I've watched NBA/MMA/PGA without issue and all looked great. Is this all devices? Have you tried your TV provider app?

level 2

Seems to be limited right now to my ATV. Any streams on my phone through those iOS apps at clear. Haven't tried my TV provider app yet, may give that a shot. Or maybe just through the smart apps on my TV.

level 1

Mine is fine. I do notice it gets blurry when there's obviously a connection issue but that only lasts about 30 seconds to a min before it gets clear again

I wish your team well in the playoffs unless that team is the Clippers lol

level 2

No dog in the fight for me, which makes it much more difficult to watch a shitty stream haha. But good luck to your Lakers?

level 1

Both apps have been giving me shitty streams for the playoffs, it's not my WiFi or internet as I get good quality via Hulu live tv but the ESPN and tnt apps end up giving me what looks like SD streams.

level 1

Do you use a 3rd party DNS (Google, Cloudflare, etc)? Doing so can confuse CDNs as to your location and introduce more latency.

level 2

Thanks for that, good to know - I was using the Google DNS Servers. The TNT stream last night was still hot garbage unfortunately. I'll give ESPN a chance here soon.

level 1

was watching (or half watching) a game yesterday and had to change it to something else because it kept stuttering and buffering.

level 1

The TNT app is trash. The ESPN is decent but the streaming quality isn't great even at its highest from the NBA broadcast. That said, 200 Mbps is not that much when spread amongst all your devices.

level 2

Agreed. TNT needs a complete overhaul. ESPN is usually decent, sometimes good, even.

level 2

That said, 200 Mbps is not that much when spread amongst all your devices.

Pretty sure that the higher quality AppleTV+ 4K streams are 25mb/s with other streaming services using lower bitrates. Unless all those devices are streaming 4K theoretically that internet connection is fine.

level 2

I only use the TNT app when it's playoff time. I've been tweeting about this for four years now, their app is such garbage. Shocking they still haven't fixed it. So frustrating. Crashes all the time. Never remembers my tv subscriptions. Picture quality sucks. Good thing they have Chuck.

ESPN quality has been good for me. App isn't perfect, but looks like a goddess next to TNT. Only problem is Doris.

level 2

Tried the TNT app on my smart tv and 2 Apple TV's and can confirm the TNT app is terrible. ESPN works much better for live streaming for me

level 1

Have tried multiple devices including Appletv 4k for YouTube, ESPN, YouTube tv and they have all been trash with their streaming quality since the pandemic started. I have an LG OLED with a 1 gig connection.

level 1

The TNT app is unbelievably bad. How can a network as big as TNT have such a trash app? I've had no issues with the ESPN app, it's been smooth.

If you're willing to pay, Sling Orange is the best for watching hoops right now. It includes TNT & ESPN, I've been watching basketball all day with no issues.

level 1

I just got my Apple 4K recently. So far watching UFC on ESPN Plus has been fine, but when I watch AEW live on the TNT app it freezes and stops all the time. Now I switch over to my Roku whenever I want to watch something on TNT because it'll run fine on that.

level 1

Try switching to Ethernet then back to wifi, fixed it for me

level 1

I have been streaming the NBA playoffs via Hulu w/ Live TV on both our ATV 4K in our living room and ATV HD in our bedroom without any issues.

Like others mentioned, it certainly could be the respective apps.

level 1

Same here these apps are putting out the lowest bandwidth even HBO MAX doesn't even have a good 4K or Dolby vision support.

level 2

I feel like TNT is like YouTube quality streams circa 2009 haha

level 1

I have been having issues with my AppleTV 3 and AT&T TV NOW. Looks good with a FireTV stick or a Roku and just average with Apple TV.
